I know I have links to full text indexing, but a while back I decided to never use full text indexing. After learning more about it I really do not like it.

The database is indexed at regular intervals, meaning searches are never real-time.
Words that appear in more than 50% of the results are ignored.
words less than 4 letters long are ignored.
Modifying how the search is performed requires server access, which many people do not have.
There are many stop words that are ignored, because they are deemed too common.

On the plus side text indexing can:

sort results by most relevant.
sort by highest number of search words found in a given result.
retrieve results faster.

Text indexing may be an option if you have several hundred thousand results to search through. maybe.
