I didn't know where else to put this, but the reason I do not use the <pre> tag to display spaces and line breaks is because the spaces are all non breaking spaces which can break the layout and when using it with displaying code the <pre> will execute the code as opposed to displaying it. It also changes the font and adds a few line breaks after the closing tag.
<pre>tan</pre>
produces :
tan
as opposed to: tan
Uses: Overall, much more trouble than it is worth. However, it can be handy when testing out code on a test page or when trying to read an array in a much more readable format.
