There is a trick to getting windows xp to center a desktop background image by default instead of the current default of stretch. The trick can be found here.
After trying it I notice that altering the desktop background from center to stretch is no longer an option. When setting the WallpaperStyle via regedit the WallpaperStyle is permanently set to whatever the current setting is regardless of the WallpaperStyle setting. This is true even after a restart.
Not the best solution, but better than always stretching or tiling images. If you go this route you can always reset it by deleting the registry key that you created. No biggie.
