States with amendments protecting marriage (31)
The following is an example of a strong marriage amendment:
Only a marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state. A legal status identical or substantially similar to that of marriage for unmarried individuals shall not be valid or recognized in this state.
States that do not have state constitutional marriage amendments protecting marriage (19)
Marriage was redefined in the following states (16)
Note: California is not on this list, because marriage was not redefined in that state. The state merely chose not to uphold that law.
This is news to me, but apparently a US constitutional amendment cannot be overturned in court. Not sure if this is all that true.
ref. If you look at states like California you can see that an amendment was challenged because it "conflicted" with another amendment.
