I'm really excited that just worked! I can modify the hash now and it won't affect the member's passwords. They will have to log in again to reset their cookies as the cookie they are using to stay logged in will no longer work, but users will be able to log back in using their current password without having to create a new one. If the salt is reset only a few times a year or as needed then most users should hardly notice.
I'm going to try and force myself to stop updating the site now with the possible exception of one or two items on the todo list that I think would be easy enough to implement. The password reset feature was not easy, but I felt that the security as it was needed to be upgraded.
