Noteworthy comics based on storytelling and artwork

Runaways by Joss Whedon tells a story of teenage friends who runaway from home to escape their powerful yet very disturbed parents and learn to fend for themselves while staying under the radar of the government and their parents.

Wolverine: 2003 This is the third incarnation of the Wolverine comics.  In this series the battles are a lot more personal as he fights drug dealers and pimps and dirty cops.

X–23 is my favorite character in the Marvel universe.  She is the female clone of Wolverine.  She was raised by Weapon X and is more of a killer than Wolverine even if she is still a teenager.  She is gothic, quiet, troubled, and very emotionally scarred from being tortured nearly her whole life.  Her favorite activity is that of an assassin.  She gloms onto Wolverine like a toddler afraid to lose track of her dad in a mall.  She is very emotionally stunted.

NYX is more of a cross between X–23 and Runaways.  NYX introduces us to the first appearance of X–23 as a prostitute for Zebra Daddy.  The story is not about X–23, it is about Kiden, a young girl who does drugs, smokes, and is just trying to survive in a family that doesn't want her and is very dysfunctional to say the least.  This story takes place on the mean streets of New York City.  The saddest part about being a runaway is when you learn that your family does not really miss you and that you have a special ability on top of it.  The artwork is amazing as well as the storyline of course.

Sentry is a tale of the most powerful super hero in the Marvel universe who might actually be a little crazy.

Rogue is another limited series like Sentry that focuses on a Marvel character for a dozen or two issues.  This one gives us an enjoyable perspective into the life of Rogue.  The same is true of Emma Frost, but the story for Emma Frost is even better.  The covers look a little pornographic, but I assure you that the actual content is not.  Give it a try, you will not be disappointed.

Incredible Hulk is a return of the mean green Hulk.  This series takes a man on the run perspective and involves Banner as much as the Hulk.  Very pleasing.

Exiles is much like the what if? series, but with continuity to it.  In the multiverse there are universes that are on the verge of collapse, but there are beings snatched from the universes that were imploding or exploding that go from universe to universe to repair the damage that was done so that the destruction does not spread across the multiverse.  The exciting thing about this series is that characters can and do die frequently and the storytelling is as always, quite awesome.  I found myself going from comic to comic at a voracious pace.
