updated the article
how to display code to fix a very wrong example and added a short snippet on how to use the
+ modifier to select chained occurances of alternating, non–printing characters. For example
/r/n/r/n/r/n... with a single occurance of
/r/n or a character like 'W' or whatever. Also fixed a few other errors that wrongly explained what certain bits of the code did and rewrote a few lines for readability.
Sorry about the errors. I don't think there are any left, but I can see how the document might be added to in the future or, much more likely, another seperate article will be written that will demonstrate other things that can be done with regular expression pattern matching, which is almost the same thing as the Perl 5 language.
From what I have learned about Perl 5 I would only use pattern matching as a way to auto–format documents and at present I don't have a reason to advance my abilities in this area further, but things change pretty quickly.
