Well, it's not perfect, but the calendar on the admin page now displays the name of the month and has Previous and Next links above the calendar.
The reason this was so tricky was that it was interfering with a number of other scripts that the admin page uses.
If I were to make it "perfect" I would add some ajax pagination to the calendar so that the whole page doesn't reload whenever I want to look at a different month. It works well enough the way it is anyway.
