When I met Michael he was a sad, but grim man.  I first met him when I was 5 and now I am 75 and Michael has not aged a day.  Michael has no last name, but he is adamant that his name is Michael.

One day I asked him how old he was, but he said he wasn't sure.  Over the years I have asked him about his past and he usually answered.  I found out he was around long before Jesus and before the flood.  He remembers Job from the Bible, but only barely.

I used to think he was as old as the world, but I now know he is far older.  At some point in the future he goes back in time to almost the time of his birth and journeys slowly towards the present day all over again.  He has done this countless times.  Thousands by now.

He doesn't know if he is human or not.  If the weight of the universe were on one side of him and the weight of another universe were on the other side pressing all of their mass against him he would not be harmed in the least.

I told him that his life sounded horrible beyond measure.  He replied that the real hell certainly does hold terrors even for him although that is not his destiny.  He knows that his life does have an end, but he is not sure how or when.  He knows that there are monsters beyond imagining in this world and beyond and he will always fight them.

He also has a master.  I found this very interesting because his master is always mortal and never really anyone special, but he takes orders from them and when one dies another always replaces him.

I asked if he was being punished.  Michael said that sometimes it feels like that, but he didn't think so.  He also told me that his inability to be harmed also extended to his sanity otherwise he may well have gone mad long long ago or else become wise beyond comprehension.  He would say that he existed and was even grateful for that.

I watched Michael fight vampires dimensional travelers and a few demons in my time.  I have seen him fight zombies and rescue a man from what he thought was the real hell, but was only a pocket universe created by hell.  Nearly all were terrified of him before their end.

More amazing to me still is Michael's laugh and his tears and his love for others even after being alive for more years than I or he can comprehend.

I asked if he would like to know when his time to die was and how.  Michael told me that it didn't matter.  If I told him it was a week from now it would still feel like an eternity and like no time at all.  Time had lost all meaning to him.  A minute was like an eternity and a million years like the blink of an eye.  He wasn't patient or impatient.  Everything happened in its time.  To him it always felt like now, so in effect there was no waiting at all.

Despite living through the history of the world many times over he told me that each run through was different than the last because he never did the same exact thing.  A lot was similar though, but never the same.  In other words it was still new.

It was important to Michael to keep me safe though and protect me.  I asked him why and he told me that he loved me.  I asked him why he loved me and he told me that he was told by his master to do so.  Michael didn't ask his master why, but his master told him anyway.  He told Michael that he needed to be reminded again what it meant to be human and what it meant to love.  When he finished that mission he would be given another mission.

It also amazed me that Michael always obeyed his masters without question.  Michael believed in God, Hell, Satan, and Michael tried to do good.  Michael was a Christian.

Looking at the being that was Michael I got some understanding about the nature of God.  Michael was certainly not God, but seemed to reflect Him somehow.

Michael did not think himself wise, but after many years I am beginning to wonder if he is actually wiser than can be comprehended.  Dunno.

Michael's life goes on and will go on long after I am gone I suspect.  I don't know whether to feel sorry for him or be in awe of him or what.
