What's at stake in Israel/Hamas war

Posted: 2/11/24

When it started: On 10/7/23 Hamas launched the largest and most horrific attack against the people of Israel since the Holocaust from 1941-1945 with over 1,300 Israelis and foreign nationals murdered and 240 hostages taken into Gaza.

Israel's Response: Israel launched a war on Hamas that was unlike any previous responses.  This war is more intense than previous responses and has gone on far longer and will likely go on for some time.  It is currently projected to last through 2024 and possibly longer.  The goal is the complete eradication of Hamas and complete control over Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank for the foreseeable future.

To Achieve This Goal: Israel has been methodical in invading and destroying Hamas and to a large degree Hezbollah starting from West Bank the North and going from region to region of the Gaza strip with only Rafah remaining.  As of 2/12/24 12,000 Hamas fighters have been killed and 10,000 fighters have been wounded (unable to continue fighting) and about 2,500 have been arrested.  This leaves 25% to 44% of Hamas fighters remaining.  Hamas fighters before the war numbered around 30,000 to 40,000.

Terms of Victory and Defeat: Victory in this war means utterly destroying Hamas and Hezbollah.  Defeat means not utterly defeating Hamas and allowing them to attack Israel again in a more horrific way than 10/7/23.
