I actually worked on the website a little.

I updated the admin portion of the articles and renamed the hidden "comments" section for the articles to "changelog" as this is what it was being used for about 99.9% of the time and works very well as a changelog.  I then created a new section called comments where I could add actual comments to articles.  Comments would be used for me to put down my thoughts such as "could the third paragraph be worded better?"  It is also a place where I can add rough drafts of additions to articles before it is made public.  Lastly, I can add content that is only visible by me.

I updated the changelog so that if an article that was created AND updated AND has no changelog before the changelog was created it will populate with the date created and date last updated.  If an article is being updated that has never been updated before and the changelog is empty, it will populate with the date the article was created.

Lastly, played around with the layout of the article edit page to make it somewhat more responsive and intuitive.  It is not perfect, but certainly an improvement.
