Wind development slows in 2010

Total wind energy capacity increased from
35,000 MW at the start of 2010 to
40,180 MW at the start of 2011. This is an increase of about 15% over 2009. 2009 had an increase of 39% over 2008.

This increase is much lower than the recent trend, but not all that bad. For those watching the market and trends in wind energy, like myself, this was expected as wind energy was developing at a break neck pace and was expected to progress at a more even pace this year. It should be interesting to see the 2011 forecast coming out in March to see if this is what the new standard for wind energy growth will look like or at least for this year.
The increase for Iowa looks to be non existent this year with
maybe 5 MW installed. This is rather sad considering the vast capacity that Iowa has for wind energy production, however, with wind energy things could change quickly as installation of turbines takes as little as 6 months to 1 year. It would be interesting to see how wind energy usage this past year compares to the other major energy powerhouses.
I am happy to see that the U.S. is diversifying its energy resources so as to avoid future energy crises such as happened in the 1970s and early 2000s, which led to very high gas prices.
