How neutral is the ninth circuit in selecting judges?

Interesting article in SCOTUSblog that calls into question the randomness in selecting judges to decide same sex marriage cases. It has been noted that the same most liberal judges Reinhardt and Berzon are selected very often 5 and 4 times out of 11 cases respectively. The odds of that happening are 441 – 1.
Update 12/16/14: Apparently, it is not random at all in regards to the high profile marriage cases. The court has a practice, which is not public knowledge, of assigning expedited cases ref.
