In most states Christians can't be judges

This article specifically talks about North Carolina judges, but in states where same sex marriage has been legalized judges who won't officiate same sex marriages based on their sincerely held religious beliefs can't turn down those requests, so they have no choice but to resign.
In short if a judge in most states are conservative they will have no choice but to resign leaving only liberal judges on the bench. This is the same as saying anyone can run for the U.S. Senate, but not conservative Republicans. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
