will there be a consensus in alternative fuels?

Gas prices have again shot up to about $3.40 a gallon over here and when I hear that I start to think about hydrogen fuel technology and wonder how far along it is. I found
this article to be rather useful in explaining some of the politics surrounding alternative fuel technology at the moment. In short it suggests that the automakers will soon come to a concensus concerning a plan of action regarding alternative automotive fuel technologies and what direction they want to head in as a whole as opposed to going in seperate directions similar to the VHS/betamax and the DVD/bluray/HD wars that we remember.
