New LG solar cell plant This is significant in that it will manufacture crystalline silicon solar cells which is forecast to make up 80% of the solar cell market. The plant is expected to start two production lines. The first should be operational by the first quarter of 2010 and the second in the first quarter of 2011. Crystalline silicon solar cells are more efficient than the thin solar cells being produced by Sharp by a few percentage points. I am not sure which will be more cost effective though.
