North Carolina Senate Passes Marriage Bill

The North Carolina Senate passed the marriage bill that was sent to them today (9/13/11) 30 to 16
ref. It needed 30 votes to pass. This was a lot closer than was expected. The wording of the amendment was crafted at least in part by Austin Nimocks of the ADF.
ref Here is how the measure is worded:
"Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State. This section does not prohibit a private party from entering into contracts with another private party; nor does this section prohibit courts from adjudicating the rights of private parties pursuant to such contracts."
refOn the ballot the measure will read as
"Constitutional amendment to provide that marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State."
refThis makes two confirmed upcoming marriage amendments on the ballot, the other being
Minnesota ref. Both will be in 2012. In 2012
New Hampshire will considering adopting a marriage amendment constitution.
ref and after the 2012 elections, most likely early 2013,
Indiana will attempt to put a marriage amendment on the ballot. It looks very promising in Indiana.
