Minnesota Supreme Court restores original title to ballot measure

The Minnesota Supreme Court ruled today (8/27/12) that attorney general Lori Swanson and secretary of state Mark Ritchie overstepped their authority when they altered the ballot title that was given to them to something they wanted as opposed to what the legislature wanted.

The original title for the ballot measure to define marriage as one man and one woman in the Minnesota state constitution was as follows:
recognition of marriage solely between one man and one woman
The attorney general Lori Swanson and secretary of state Mark Ritchie who were against the measure later rewrote it as follows:
limiting the status of marriage to opposite sex couples
The amendment itself reads:
Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to provide that only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota?
It will be voted on this November 6, 2012.
