Supreme Court grants emergency stay (halt) of same sex marriages in Utah

Today, 1/6/14, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously granted a stay of federal judge Shelby's decision ruling that the state's same sex ban in Utah was unconstitutional until the 10th Circuit rules on the appeal. A hearing date has not yet been set, but the briefing is scheduled to be comopleted by February 25, 2014.

Earlier 12/24/13, a two judge panel for the 10th circuit denied an emergency appeal by the Attorney General and Governor of Utah for a stay of federal judge Shelby's ruling.

The 10th Circuit is not likely to rule on this case until The next term in October with a final ruling possibly in January of 2015.

Utah: The issue is whether states may define marriage as they see fit or whether it violates the 14th amendment for equal protection.
California: This was just a circus from start to finish with the end result being that no one was willing to enforce the law.
